BE QUIET, TIFFANY, BE QUIET! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? STOP IT! I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFE YELLED AT A GIRL LIKE THIS. WHEN MY MOTHER YELLS LIKE THIS IT’S BECAUSE SHE LOVES ME. I WAS ROOTING FOR YOU, WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU. HOW DARE YOU? LEARN SOMETHING FROM THIS. WHEN YOU GO TO BED AT NIGHT, YOU LAY THERE AND YOU TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOURSELF, ‘CAUSE NOBODY’S GONNA TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOU. YOU ROLLIN’ YOUR EYES AND YOU ACTING LIKE THIS BECAUSE YOU’VE HEARD IT ALL BEFORE. YOU’VE HEARD IT ALL BEFORE, YOU DON’T KNOW WHERE THE HELL I COME FROM, YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I’VE BEEN THROUGH. BUT I’M NOT A VICTIM, I GROW FROM IT, AND I LEARN. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOURSELF.

Cildo Meireles, Mission/Missions (How to Build Cathedrals), 1987
The finest piece from the post-1984 period is Mission/Missions (How to Build Cathedrals) (1987), which was shown at the ICA in London in 1990. This is the most visually spectacular of all his installations, and the most explicitly religious. It was made for an exhibition exploring the Jesuit missions to South America between 1610 and 1767, when the Jesuits were themselves suppressed by the papacy. Around 600,000 coins are laid out like a square carpet on the gallery floor, and from the mid-point, a thin column of communion wafers rises around eight feet into the air where it meets a matching suspended square canopy made from 2,000 bones. Meireles has explained: “I wanted to construct something that would be a kind of mathematical equation, very simple and direct, connecting three elements: material power, spiritual power, and a kind of unavoidable, historically repeated consequence of this conjunction, which was tragedy. I wanted a sky of bones, a floor of money, and a column of communion wafers to unite these two elements.” Here, as so often in Meireles’s work, mathematics is moralised and given a troublingly tangible architecture. Breaking DOMA News of the Day: In a victory for gay marriage advocates that rivals the enormity of Proposition 8 in California, the First Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Boston today upheld a lower court’s ruling and declared the federal Defense of Marriage Act unconsitutional.
From the court’s opinion:
“[M]any Americans believe that marriage is the union of a man and a woman, and most Americans live in states where that is the law today. One virtue of federalism is that it permits this diversity of governance based on local choice, but this applies as well to the states that have chosen to legalize same-sex marriage. Under current Supreme Court authority, Congress’ denial of federal benefits to same-sex couples lawfully married in Massachusetts has not been adequately supported by any permissible federal interest.”
Expect the ruling to be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Say What Now of the Day: Vanderbilt head football coach James Franklin said in an interview Wednesday that the appearance of coaches’ wives factors into the interview process:
I’ve been saying it for a long time, I will not hire an assistant coach until I’ve seen his wife. If she looks the part, and she’s a D-1 recruit, then you got a chance to get hired. That’s part of the deal.
He continued:
There’s a very strong correlation between having the confidence, going up and talking to a women, and being quick on your feet and having some personality and confidence and being fun and articulate, than it is walking into a high school and recruiting a kid and selling him.
Franklin took to Twitter today after his comments made the rounds: “My foot doesn’t taste good, I hope I did not offend any1, I love & respect ALL,have a great day, enjoy the fam & don’t forget 2 #AnchorDown”

So at Beyonce’s concert last weekend in Atlantic City (the Monte Carlo of New Jersey), she gave a shout-out to Michelle Williams, who — along with fellow Destiny’s Child lesser-known Kelly Rowland — babysat Blue Ivy Carter while her mom was performing.
Do you think she does that just to remind them that they aren’t as famous as her?
If so, brilliant.

Better Late Than Never of the Day: Three months after McDonald’s famously vowed to come up with a plan for phasing out sow confinement by its pork suppliers, the fast-food behemoth is making good on its promise.
McDonald’s unveiled on Thursday a 10-year outline that includes a goal by 2017 of only buying pork from suppliers that ”share its commitment to phase out gestation stalls.”
The move follows similar pledges from Burger King and Safeway, both of which buy less pork than McDonald’s.

Controversial Facebook Photos of the Day: Air National Guard members Terran Echegoyen-McCabe and Christina Luna recently posted to Facebook several pics of themselves breastfeeding in fatigues — which they do all the time on Fairchild Airforce Base in Spokane, Washington – and their photos have prompted outcry from around the world.
No matter that there are no rules in military conduct against breastfeeding in uniform; one disparaging Facebook comment compared the images to “urinating and defecating.”
Fellow soldier Rita Trujillo commented: “I as one of many women who fought long and hard to be accepted and respected as fellow soldiers and the right to wear these uniforms feel shocked, angry at these published photos.”
The photos were taken for the Mom2Mom Breastfeeding Support Group, which raises awareness of women’s right to breastfeed in public.
